Kitty McSporran Saves the Animals
Written and Illustrated by Kathleen McLaren

A beautifully illustrated children's book available from
Humane Research Australia

'Young scientist Kitty McSporran is disturbed by the use of animals in medical and product testing. Dreams and magic help her find a solution that benefits all animals including humans."

"People don't like to think about animal experimentation. They know it involves pain and suffering to animals but falsely believe that it is necessary if we are to find cures to diseases. Fortunately, there are now many alternatives that not only spare animals from the laboratory, but also provide better outcomes for human cures. This wonderful story about Kitty McSporran addresses this taboo subject in a colourful and non- confronting way. Readers share in Kitty's discovery that by not accepting the status quo, we can show compassion to other animals AND further medical research".

Ideas for teachers by teachers
Teachers, if you have done any interesting animal related projects in your classroom, please email Animals and Us to share them to inspire other teachers.

Scott has made this video of his students' poster on factory farming. He is originally from Canada but now teaches English at Oak Tree School in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Scott says, "The school has Meatless Mondays, an organic garden and most recently a 'Morning Fruit Break Policy' replacing their normal milk break. The principal is very supportive of progressive ideas. My Grade 3 class made the poster about Factory Farming for their Science class on pollution. I just started to teach my kids about animals and factory farming.
