PIGS CRY
to print and give to your students. |
Shelly Williams has generously shared her poem for you to download and print for your classroom. The poem was inspired by Lucy who is an ambassador for pigs in factory farms.
Use some of the pig activity pages and ask children what we could do to make life better for pigs.
Ask children to do some research about pigs especially about how sensitive, sociable and intelligent they are.
John White wrote his poem after looking at the Animals Australia Website and watching videos of caged animals in factory farms.

POETRY ABOUT ANIMALS
.Pigs Cry
.A poem by Shelley Williams, inspired by Lucy
PDF version to print
I give birth to five bouncing babies,
then watch as their teeth are cut from their mouths,
I lay and scream,
Because I cannot stand and run.
I have never walked on grass,
I have never felt the sunshine,
I lay trapped in a massive stinky warehouse,
soaking in faeces and urine.
I look into a puddle of water,
At the front corner of my cage,
It's moving. Overcome with thirst,
I drink down the wriggling maggots
that do not die in my gullet.
They are living within me now,
Eating away at my flesh,
As this cage eats at my soul.
I cry.
I cry and bite the metal bars in front of my face.
I cry as the legs from the cages around me,
prod and kick me with aimless rage.
We cry.
We cry as a little girl picks up a Christmas Ham,
And takes an innocent bite.
We cry as each untold truth turns to a lie
The lie that seals our fate.
Someone tell this little girl,
Tell her of my pain.
Help her understand my world,
So she can make a choice.
And help her understand that,
The consumer has a voice.

O to be Free
.A poem by John White
PDF version to print
A meat eater I have been for sixty years
Until I saw a video that brought me to tears
Of the cruelty we impose on animals grown for meat
Chickens, Cows, Pigs and Turkey CAGED cannot move in the heat
If we treated our pets in this way
In prison we would go, and throw the key away
For these caged animals its legal because they are grown for profit
So speak up until our voice is heard to stop it
Tell your friends lobby your M.P.
Free these animals let them live as they should be
Feeding on good grass, growing and roaming.
O to be Free.

Lulu was purchased from a piggery when she was 4 weeks old (just weaned) she had mange and was very itchy, her skin was dry, cracked and sore. After a few baths in some awfully bad smelling medicated wash her skin became healthy again.
Lulu has visited primary schools where she would pick the sand shoes with the coarsest tread to scratch on !
If Lulu had not been rescued, this is what her existance might have been like.
